For each of these codes colored dots or bands are used to indicate the value of the capacitor.

Capacitor color band codes. All the color bands painted on the capacitors body are used to indicate the capacitance value and capacitance tolerance. First of all capacitors are coded in pico farads pronounced peko farads. The markings format is dependent upon what type of capacitor is given.

Some of these markings and codes include capacitor polarity marking. These markings and codes indicate various properties for the capacitors and it is essential to understand them in order to select the required type. The number of dots or bands on a capacitor may vary from one another.

If we consider a four color band capacitor then the first and second colors marked on the capacitor represents the value of the capacitor and the third color band represents the decimal multiplier in picofarads.
